History of the icon
The icon "Holy Ttrinity" is based on the biblical story (Genesis18,1) about the appearance of God under the guise of three Angels to forefather Abraham: "Then the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day..." The Holy Trinity is depicted in the icons as three Angels, God Father, God Son and Holy Spirit. The dogma of the Holy Trinity is the foundation of the Christian Faith. The faithful would pray the Holy Trinity for remission of sins.
The Holy Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Trinity (Pentecost) on the 50th day after Easter. The Feast is dedicated to the Descent of the Holy Spirit onto the Apostles after Ascension. It is called the Trinity day, because the Descent of the Holy Spirit revealed benevolence of all the Persons of the Triune God towards the humankind, God Father sending the Holy Spirit, God Son praying to the God Father for sending the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit descending under the guise of divided tongues, as of fire, and sanctifying the world through the foundation of the Church and preaching the Faith.
