The icon from the Church of the Sign at the Hospital named after N.I. Pirogov in Moscow. The icons of Theotokos named " of the Sign", appeared in Rus in the 11th and 12th centuries, and were named so after a Holy Sign from the Novgorod icon appeared in 1170. This was the time of never ending internecine wars in Rus. A united army of Russian princes attacked the city of Novgorod. Day and night, the citizens prayed for the delivery from the invasion. After a prayer service at the church of Christ the Saviour, Archbishop John took the icon of Theotokos on top the city wall. An arrow from the attacking troops hit the icon. The icon turned to the city, and the holy tears appeared on the image spilling on the Archbishop's vestment. Thus the wonderworking icon of Theotokos gave the Sign that the Holy Lady prays before Her Son for the delivery of the city. At that very moment, an inexplicable fear overwhelmed the attacking troops, and they left the city walls.

Icon of Theotokos 'Of the Sign' is one of the most venerated by Russians The faithful would pray before it for cessation of calamities, protection from the enemies' invasion, fire, thieves and criminals, as well as for the return of lost things, protection of our compatriots who are forced to wander around the globe, for pacification of the belligerent and delivery from internecine wars.
