According to a Church legend, the Hodegetria icon was brought to Russia from Byzantium in the 11th century.
According to a Church legend, the Hodegetria icon was brought to Russia from Byzantium in the 11th century. From the 12th century till 1941 it was kept in the Dormition Cathedral of Smolensk. The icon disappeared during the German occupation of the city. Its further whereabouts remain unknown. Yet its wonderworking copies and replicas still exist and continue to heal the faithful through Her prayers. People would pray before the Smolensk icon of Theotokos for recovery from incurable diseases, peace in families, and in other difficult situations that appear hard to tackle.
