The icon comes from the Ascension Cathedral of the Ascensuin monastery the Moscow Kremlin. The most ancient of preserved icons by Dionysius. According to a chronicler, the icon lost its paint layer and frame in a fire in 1482, yet the panel survived. Dionysius was commissioned to paint a new icon on the panel to replicate the old icon. The term «Hodegetria» is also used to denote the icon type, in which the faces of Theotokos and Holy Infant do not touch each other. 'Hodegetria' means 'guide' in Greek; the icon depicts the Mother of God in a solemn posture with a raised hand directed towards Her Son, thus guiding the mankind to salvation.
