Feast day: August 9 (July 27 Julian calendar).

The Great Martyr Panteleimon is venerated by the Orthodox Church as a Holy Protector of soldiers and a Healer of diseases of the body and the soul. St. Panteleimon lived in the city of Nicomedia in 3d and 4th centuries, where he studied medicine and was baptized as a young man. He devoted his entire life to the suffering, the miserable and the sick; he visited prisons where he cured the inmates. He treated the needy free of charge, with his prayers rather than the medicines. For the profession of his faith, the Saint suffered ruthless torture and death. When he was beheaded, milk appeared instead of blood, and the olive tree, to which he was roped, reaped fruit. Parts of his Holy relics were distributed among the Christian holy sited throughout the world. His Holy head is kept in the Russian St. Panteleiimon's monastery on Mount Athos. Numerous cases of healing through the prayers by this Saint make him venerable even today.

O Saintly Passion Bearer and Healer Panteleimon, pray to the Merciful God to give absolution of sins to our souls.
