Venerable Sergius (1314-1392) is the greatest Saint and Wonderworker of Russia, the founder of St. Trinity Sergius' Laura. He was born in the village of Varnitsy in the vicinity of the city of Rostov to a family of pious noblemen, Cyril and Maria. The boy was baptized as Bartholomew. After his parents' death, Bartholomew became a monk and founded a monastery in the name of the Most Holy Virgin near the city of Radonezh. In reward for his righteous life. the Saint was blessed with the appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos accompanied by Apostles John and Peter. Venerable Sergius of Radonezh was gifted with a special blessing to help children making poor progress in their studies, to help in recovery from illnesses, and indeed in any trouble. The Saint prophesied the victory in the Kulikovo battle and blessed Prince Dmitry Donskoy to fight the Tartars. Throughout his life, he founded several monasteries along with the Trinity Sergius' Laura, namely, Visotsky, Andronik's and Simon's. Boris and Gleb's, and Annunciation monasteries. Shortly before his repose, Venerable Sergius said to his brethren: 'Listen to yourselves, brothers. In the first place, you should have the fear of God, clearness of souls, and unfeigned love...'
