The icon is presently kept in A. Rublev's Museum of Ancient Russian Arts. This image of St. John the Forerunner is peculiar for his glance directed right at the viewer, which can sometimes be found in Russian deisis icons of the first third of 13th cent. The icons artistic peculiarities stem from the Byzantine and Balkan traditions of 14th cent. St. John the Forerunner is next only to Theotokos in veneration by the Church. He was the son of priest Zachariah and Righteous Elizabeth, who lived near Hebron to the South of Jerusalem. By god's mercy, St. John escaped the death among thousands of babies slaughtered in Bethlehem ant its vicinity. The Saint grew up in the desert, leading a severe life on strict fasting and prayers. At the age of 13, St. John was called on by God to serve Him by preaching to the Jewish people. The Prophet called for repentance saying 'Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.' The Saint Prophet was blessed to baptize Lord Jesus Christ Himself in the river of Jordan. The Saint met a martyr's demise from King Herod through decapitation for His fearless strive to bring others to the righteous way of life. According to a Church prayer, St. Prophet John the Forerunner was the light morning star whose shining exceeded the others and foretold the morning of the blessed day enlightened by Christ, the Sun of Righteousness (Malachi 4,2)
The feast day of St. John the Forerunner: September 23 (October 6). Assumption of Honored Glorified Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John
