Metropolitan Nicholas of Alma-Ata and Kazakhstan (secular name; Feodosy Nikiforovich Mogilevsky, 1877 - 1955) was canonized in the synaxis of New Martyrs and Confessors as a Hieroconfessor in 2000.
He was tonsured in 1904, on the eve of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker's feast day. From 1919, he was the Bishop of Starodubsk, from 1932, the Bishop of Kashira, from 1927, the Bishop of Orel. In 1932 he was arrested and sentenced to 5 years' imprisonment and further exile to Kazakhstan. In 1945, after an appeal from Patriarch Sergius (who died in 1944) he was released from the exile and appointed the Archbishop of Alma-Ata and Kazakhstan, in 1955 he became a Metropolitan. During his time in the seat, he managed to establish a sizeable Orthodox community; about 40 thou. people attended his funeral. The Metropolitan was remembered by his flock as a very kind pastor, always praying in tears.
