Archbishop Seraphim (Ostroumov) of Smolensk and Dorogobuzh (1880 - 1937) was canonized in the Synaxis of New Martyrs and Confessors in 2001. For eight years he was the Archimandrite of Yablochinsky St. Onuphrius' Monastery and contributed a lot to its prosperity. In summer 1917, he was elected the Bishop of Orel and Sevsk. He was an open opponent of confiscation of the church property and closing of churches. On the day of Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple, he arranged a 20-thousand Cross Procession in Orel. In 1922, the Bishop was arrested and sentenced to seven years in correction prison. As the Archbishop of Smolensk, he opposed the modernist schism. In 1937 he was arrested again, prosecuted for 'arrangement of anti-Soviet activities' and shot by the firing squad in Katyn forest near Smolensk on December 8, 1937.
