St. Great Martyr Dimitrios was the Roman proconsul in the Greek city of Thessalonica. His parents were cryptochristians and baptized him as a child. In 305, when Maximian became the Emperor, he issued the order 'to put to death everyone invoking Christ.' Dimitrios openly professed his Christian Faith. On the Emperor's order, he was imprisoned and then martyred. On his icons, St. Dimitrios is always depicted in armor and with a sword in his hand. IN Russia, his veneration is associated with the protection of Motherland; each Saturday immediately preceding his feast day is called St. Dimitrios Saturday and devoted to commemoration of the reposed.
