Movable Feast

Lazarus Saturday is the Saturday immediately preceding the Palm Sunday, the day on which the Church commemorates the miracle of resurrection of Lazarus. St. Righteous Lazarus was the brother of Martha and Maria and lived in Bethany. Christ often visited them. He reposed four days before Christ's arrival. 'Your brother will rise again... - Christ says to console Martha. - I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.' (John 11: 23 - 26). Then Christ commanded to move away the stone from the cave in which Lazarus was buried and cried with a loud voice: 'Lazarus, come forth!' And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes...' (John 11:43–44). St. Lazarus later secluded on Cyprus where he became a Bishop and preached Christianity. Lazarus' resurrection was the sign of reassurance in general resurrection of the dead and life eternal.

Troparion, Tone 1
Thou didst give a pledge of the general resurrection before Thy Passion, O Christ our God, by raising Lazarus from the dead. Therefore, we too, like the children, carry the symbols of victory and cry to Thee, the Vanquisher of death: Hosanna in the Heights! Blessed is He Who comes in the Name of the Lord.
