Movable feast 

The feast day is the last Sunday before Easter, six days prior to Christ's passions and crucifixion. Another name for the Feast is the Palm Day, as the inhabitants of Jerusalem greeted Christ with palm leaves (which transformed into willow in Russian Orthodoxy). IN the center of the icon there is the Saviour mounted on a donkey. Joyful residents of the city greet Him with the ancient greeting that could only be addressed to a King: 'Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel! Hosanna in the Heights!' (Psalm 117). The Lord's entry in Jerusalem is called the Royal Entry in accordance with Zacchary's prophecy:' ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, lowly, and sitting on a donkey...' (Matthew 21:1-5). Jesus Christ's Royal Entry symbolizes the future coming of the Lord's Kingdom, without earthly power and might, the Kingdom of love and victory over the sins of the world.

Thou didst give a pledge of the general resurrection before Thy Passion, O Christ our God, by raising Lazarus from the dead. Therefore, we too, like the children, carry the symbols of victory and cry to Thee, the Vanquisher of death: Hosanna in the Heights! Blessed is He Who comes in the Name of the Lord.
